The A Designs "EM Series" is a twist on the P-1. Each color has its own sound. This was accomplished by using different custom wound output and input transformers.
The EM-Silver has a custom wound steel output transformer which will translate into a darker sound than the P-1, EM-Red, and EM-Blue. We find the EM-Silver to be a very good match with "Ribbon Microphones". This is a good combination due to the fact that steel transformers were widely used in the early days of recording and broadcast along with ribbon microphones.
It depends on which ribbon you have or use which will determine the sound/color/flavor you will receive. With today’s influx of ribbon microphones there is a wide choice of character range available for you to determine which tone you are looking for or need.
Another feature of the EM-Silver is a "DI" (direct inject) for use with electric instruments. We find that this is a great pre for Bass Guitar and Keyboards. Also, you may like to try the EM-Silver (depending on microphone) for your "kick" when recording drums! This is a very versatile tool for any recording situation.
Here's a bit of history on the P-1 mic-pre which served as the basis for the EM series design.
What we're going to do is go back... WAY back!
...back into time... to the early 1970s, when the recording industry was starting to bloom with the new technology of solid state.
Hit products were pumped out as fast as hit records - one after another. There was a creative industry within the audio world. It was, without question, a golden age. Some companies that emerged during that period were Neve, API, and Quad Eight. Although it's been decades, the benchmarks they set are still held as industry standards today.
Little is known about Quad Eight, though many feel that they were the best in their field. While debating is usually best left to the history books, A-Designs took up the challenge to take a closer look into the past and decide on its own.
With much research, interviews, and listening, they came up with a product that we feel needs to see the light of day again. With Quad Eight Ventura, Coronado and Pacifica console preamplifiers for reference, they closely examined the design and composition of the heart and soul in the consoles of these great pieces. After much design, A/Bing, and beta testing, the result is a solid state, single space, rack mounted, microphone pre amplifier from the "glory days".
Cloning being what it is (same old same old), A Designs Audio decided to head outside the box and make the tribute something other than the legacy. They added our own touch to bring it to present day applications of the recording world.
The EM-Silver, a twist on the P-1, is a 500 series module with the amazing mojo of the already famous A Designs Audio Pacifica Microphone Preamplifier.
